Final Reflection - 30A

Image
1) This semester has been packed with lots of great experiences and some dreadful ones as well. Such as getting the flu for 2 weeks and going to see the west coast for the first time ever in my life. 2) For me, I would say the most formative experience personally was creating a venture and pitching that idea several times and tweaking it each time to make it better. Committing to an idea and following through with it despite all of the problems that may arise, just knowing when an idea is worth following and when it may not be. 3) I definitely see what it takes now to become an entrepreneur and have a better understanding of how entrepreneurs think. I don't particularly see myself as an entrepreneur because I do not actively seek out problems that need to be fixed and am not heavily involved in the local entrepreneurship community like some of my other friends. By training my mind to look for the opportunities in problems that are present, I am training myself to be an opportunis...

Venture Concept No. 2

Image
Over the course of the past few weeks, I have been working towards the implementation of societal and environmentally friendly street lamps that provide better sight during dark hours. What merely started as a thought in my mind has sprouted into a full-blown business idea ready to be shared with the community. With the seed having been planted, I have been conducting several interviews, conducting elevator pitches and receiving feedback from classmates to see what works and what I should change to make better. There are several factors that have been important in developing the venture, however, my main focus has been primarily on three things: identifying opportunity, hammering innovation, and clarifying my venture concept. In this essay, I will elaborate on each of these sections while solidifying my venture in the process. I find opportunity best when I let my thoughts flow effortlessly, and typically when I do this, my mind begins to wander and explore different problems. This...

27A - Reading Reflection No.3

Cognitive Surplus - Clay Shirky 1) The general theme of cognitive surplus starts out with the concept that we have 8 hours of work, 8 hours of sleep and 8 hours to ourselves. It is a concept that has stemmed from the industrial revolution and has allowed more time to ourselves. In the modern era, many more people are working in different ways than we have in the past which is allowing us more free time. And generally speaking, most of us do not know how to spend that free time and put it towards something meaningful. 2) This book connected with me by demonstrating that most behavior is accomplished through motive, opportunity and means. It resonates with what is taught in the class because the class emphasizes acting upon certain means such as social networks to reach a specific audience of people. 3)If I were to design an exercise for the class based on this book, I would have people total up the number of hours daily they have for themselves. Next, I would have them create a syste...

28A - Your exit strategy

1) As far as my exit strategy with my current venture, I plan on selling it within the next 5 years. It is a quick fix problem that can be implemented within that amount of time, especially within the City of Gainesville. 2) I have selected this exit strategy for two reasons: I feel that 5 years is a sufficient time frame to implement these lights. And also afterwards this gives me more leeway to work on other goals in mind. 3) My exit strategy is because of the future of the company and where I personally see myself with it in the future. I have identified opportunities no differently than I would if I were to continue the endeavor for more than 5 years.

26A - Celebrating Failure

1) This semester, I lost a friend's trust after I spoke about him to a another friend and he found out. This was not a good approach and I should have been upfront and honest with him. It is much better to be honest and talk through to someone about how you feel than to tell someone else, even though it may be hard. 2) I learned that out of respect for the other person, it is better to be honest than to put on a facade or not be straightforward. Trust is at stake and it takes much more time to build trust than to break it, and once trust is lost. It takes time to build back. I learned that if someone has value in your life, than it is worthwhile to treat that person as such and treat them as you would want to be treated. 3) Failure is most definitely hard, and embarrassing. It takes fortitude and humility to be able to learn from failure and move on from it. Change is essential, and for me personally when I don't overthink the process of change and let it occur naturally, it ...

23A - Your venture's unfair advantage

What makes you so special? 10 resources: 1. Human capital (medium) 2. Financial capital (medium) 3. Teamwork (medium 4. Drive (hard) 5. Labor (easy) 6. Human resources (easy) 7. Support systems (medium) 8. Educational resources (easy) 9. Equipment (easy) 10. Energy and passion (hard to come by) Energy and passion is probably the most valuable resource that we have because it is intangible, meaning that it does not have a price and you cannot buy it. It is something that comes from within each person when they create meaning in the work that they do. There is a strong purpose and connection as to why you are doing something. That energy and passion makes all the rest of the resources possible to attain. Without passion or energy, none of the other resources are possible.

25A - What's next

Existing Market: Interview 1: I interviewed a fellow friend named Jeffrey, who walks campus during the night and has had a handful of scary experiences at night. Jeffrey says that I should also focus on potentially adding some sort of alert system on the lights that monitors activity below during the night. Just having better lighting may help, but it is not guaranteed to make the streets safer for others at night. Other than this, he liked how Interview: 2: The second interview I conducted was of an engineer who I came across at the library, and he seemed to be more interested in the mechanics of the lightbulb of course, which I gave him the best of my knowledge how it worked. He said that he thought it was a great idea, yet he had never experienced any problems with poor lighting since he lives in a well-lit house. Interview 3: My final interview was actually someone that works for the city of Gainesville. Maintenance is the department in which she works, and he says that the pro...

22A: Elevator Pitch #3

Elevator Pitch #3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEtbrweDXWU&feature=youtu.be Feedback reflection : Enrique commented on my second elevator pitch and stated that I had great energy and kept it through the entirety of the pitch. He also stated that it was an improvement from my last one since I wasn't able to maintain interest of the viewer on my first elevator pitch. What did you change?:  I changed my introduction and actually had the lights turn on at the beginning of my video rather than use my hand to cover the camera. My friend helped me out with that. I also tried to let my pitch flow more rather than make it seem scripted, which could come off as ingenuine.

21A - Reading Reflection

1) Goals are inherently not a good method for moving forward, instead build systems that allow room for error to minimize discouragement. 2) The book goes into more personal problems that many of us come across when striving for goals which include burnout, discouragement, doubt, hardship, etc. We do not learn how to deal with any of these issues in ENT3003, but it is the other side of the same coin. In ENT3003, we learn the other side of the same coin. 3) I would practice mentally not getting worked up over goals and emotionally worked up over them. Instead, I would focus on building a system that I enjoy and practice being in a neutral state of mind which allows me to be in the present and enjoy what I am doing. 4) The "Aha" moment for me was this: The author states that he does not believe in finding your passion, but rather finding your energy within. Staying energetic and inspired is paramount because you learn to enjoy life as you go through the journey. The whole fi...

20A - Growing your social capital

Allan Malaki - Venture capitalist and startup owner 1) Allan is originally from the Philippines and moved here at the age of 20 years old. He did all of the schoolings in the Philippines and has a very tenacious attitude. He is also a certified CPA 2) I classify Allan as a domain expert because he has experience in the early phases of companies and currently has a successful startup that is based around accounting services for lower-end income people. 3) I actually found Allan through Couchsurfing a few months ago, as he hosted me in San Francisco for a couple of nights. As it turns out, he is a perfect candidate for the role I am trying to fill because of all that he has accomplished. 4) Allan was more than willing to share his knowledge with me. I had a great visit to San Francisco and we established a thorough friendship in the time being. 5) Having Allan in my network of people will allow me to prospect businesses on the west coast and how the start-up process is done over the...

Elevator Pitch #2

Elevator Pitch 2 Looking back on my first elevator pitch, I received feedback stating that my energy died down towards the end and that I was just saying facts, so I focused on keeping the energy up the entire time this time and not saying facts as a robot would. Because everyone knows the facts of course.

18A - Create a customer avatar

Image
I imagine my avatar being a hard-working young lady. She drives a white Prius and enjoys working out and going on walks in her spare time. She has no children, but has a dog and enjoys taking her dog out for walks every night before she goes to bed. She is focused on making a living and pushing her career forwards. She enjoys reading books in her spare time, and instead of watching TV shows this is how she spends leisure time. I feel that I am primarily concerned with getting a career figured out for myself and love dogs, so I share those traits in common with this young lady. I also believe that reading books is a better way to spend my time as it opens me up to new perspectives.

19A - Idea Napkin No. 2

You - I am a person who values responsibility, integrity, and perseverance. I enjoy playing guitar and acting and finding opportunities to network with others in these industries. I am a great diplomat and encourage others to explore their strengths and values when working with others, to create a dynamic team. My aspirations are to work on getting the city of Gainesville to help subsidize this project, as well as get exact costs down on how much it would cost to power the city with new, efficient light bulbs. What are you offering to customers? -   I am offering a more efficient method to better illuminate the dark, residential streets of Gainesville and throughout campus. Many residents of the community have experienced robberies, a fear of going outside at night and simply not being able to see well when driving, and I believe that by solving this unmet need of lighting, people will feel safer getting around at night. Who are you offering it to? -  All of my customers liv...

Figuring out buyer behavior - 15A

Alternative Evaluation : Based on the interviews I conducted, I found that all three of my interviewees stated that price was the largest factor when it came to buying something, however quality was seen as very important as well. Two of the three interviewees stated that they would pay a higher price for a better quality product that would last longer. The style was the next most important thing in all of the interviews, after quality. How/where do they buy? Based on the interviews, buying in person appeared to be more popular than buying through e-commerce because of wanting things instantly. If the product is available in store, then the consumers are more likely to buy in store than online. Whether or not the financing was preferred over buying something outright was largely dependent on the person's financial status. One of the interviewees stated if they had the money, then purchasing it outright was preferred. Post-purchase evaluation: Necessity and how much the product w...

16A - What's your secret sauce?

1) a)  I am not afraid to put myself in situations and opportunities to meet new people and absorb new information. b) I truly try my best to detach myself from my ego always, which makes it easy when receiving criticism to capitalize on it. c) I am motivated by helping others have a good experience in whatever it is that they are doing. I get much more satisfaction from people telling me they love the product/experience than from receiving monetary reinforcement. d) People can tell the difference between when someone is genuinely interested in someone or when they are using others as a means to an end. I believe that my ability to foster relationships and treat others for what they are is undervalued and that I encompass that trait. e) I speak three languages: English, Spanish and Italian. I think that speaking different languages with people stimulates creativity and gets me thinking in a different way. 2.  https://www.dropbox.com/sh/sfoim9i75o6olcl/AAC6stzQ1X0wla7GNl...

14A - Halfway reflection

Image
1) Setting reminders constantly on my phone on set times to do assignments have allowed me to become more time-efficient and prioritize work. Also setting aside certain time throughout the days to complete the assigments. 2) There are lots of times where I feel like giving up. I lose vision of what I am doing everything for and it feels like I am driving down a road and I don't know where I am. Learning to stay the course and having thick skin are habits that I have developed as a result. 3) Developing a tenacious attitude is easiest when people do work that moves them in an emotional way, and impacts them. So I would say to take classes and develop a student mindset in everything you do will help develop tenacity. And being around people that have values that are similar to what one aspires to be is equally important.

Figuring out buyer behavior No.1

1. For the segment, I chose a demographic of young college students, from 18-25 years of age 2. Need Awareness - throughout the interviews I conducted, it appears that the need becomes most salient after sundown when it is dark outside. The interviewers would say that they felt uncomfortable walking their dog or taking out the trash at night because of the lack of lights where the lived. The need is most salient when clients are home by themselves and need to go outside for a particular reason and cannot see well outside. This makes them scared. When the person feels uncomfortable or cannot see very well outside, they typically use the light on their phone or bring out a flashlight. 2 of 3 of the clients have porch lights that they leave on and stay close to their home so that they are able to see. 1 of the clients has tiki torches that are used in the backyard at night. Clients typically search for different lights so that they can see better and be more aware of surroundings. S...

Reading Reflection No.1 - 13A

Muhammad Yunus / $27 and a dream What surprised you the most? - Muhammad's faith and belief in the poor being able to learn and manage on their own is something that very few people, especially middle-upper class people believe. He started a business in the form of banking, called Grameen Bank, but with the purpose to help the poor receive credit and get on their feet by teaching them a few financial principles. What about the entrepreneur do you most admire? - With his smarts and the path he took, Muhammad could have very easily been a wealthy magnate in the United States and set his sights on building wealth. Rather than do this, Muhammad did what I thought was paradoxical; he created a banking system that was actually in favor of the poor. No banking system in the history of the world has ever treated micro-credit as a need and taught financial principles to the poor. They usually exploit ignorance and profit off of it. I really admire that Muhammad has done this for the po...

Idea Napkin No. 1 - 11A

You - I am a psychology student at the University of Florida. Many of my strengths include diplomacy, an ability to see things from the perspective of clients and my ability to accept and learn from criticism. My aspirations include improving the lighting in residential areas all around Gainesville, including the University of Florida to ensure the safety of the community. This role would improve the lives of many by creating a safer environment while driving/walking at night. - All of my customers live in areas that lack sufficient lighting durin...

Elevator Pitch #1

Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2

Who: There do appear to be a handful of certain people who fall out of the boundary for this service. Since the service would most likely be a public good for the community, with not much opportunity from a monetary profit, the City of Gainesville and the GRU appear to fall outside the boundary. With more efficient lighting, costs will run lower and that means less money to the GRU. What: The need I have discussed regarding the implementation of safer, more efficient lights throughout the city, does not appear to be as serious as other more innate needs, such as the need to be loved by others or hunger/thirst. This may dissuade the city or other companies to produce such a product with this knowledge in mind. Why: The underlying cause of outsider's need is, in fact, different than the need for those that fall within the boundary. There are two different populations of interest, and one is the beneficiary while the other is majorly the one providing the service. ' Insi...

8A-Solving the problem

The problem/ selected opportunity : Lighting in Gainesville residential/university areas are not efficient in the way they run. Currently, high-pressure sodium vapor lamps and incandescent lights are being used as a form of outdoor lighting to illuminate the streets, which is not nearly as efficient and cost-effective as other forms of lighting. Solution: Rather than continuing to use incandescent lights which require more maintenance and more costs in replacing, and paying an electrician to replace them. Implementing more energy-efficient lights in the streets, such as compact fluorescent lights that are moderated, or halogen lights rather than the sodium vapor lamps. These forms of lighting can be up to 100% more energy efficient and can be better for eye health. These lights are already in existence so this issue can be resolvable easily. The current lights are not cutting it and are simply outdated. Although it can be a private service to residential areas that pay a neighborhood...

Testing the hypothesis: Part 1

#1: The city of Gainesville has glossed over street lighting issues near the downtown and midtown area perhaps because of costs associated with building lamp posts and energy costs. The who:  The city of Gainesville The what: they have not paid enough attention to fixing street and alleyway lighting issues around the downtown and midtown areas.  The why: Most likely because of no incentive to spend excess money on building lamp posts and energy costs associated with lighting.  #2: Boundaries of the who: Residents and business owners of the area share the need for improving lighting in residential areas and alleyways, GRU working with the city to reduce costs, the city of Gainesville.  The city of Gainesville does not appear to be the only "who" in fixing the lighting issue. According to others I have interviewed, the GRU's relationship with the city of Gainesville and lighting could be further built upon to reach an agreement where both parties' interes...

Identifying opportunities in economic and regulatory trends

#1: An opportunity to lower home rent costs in San Francisco and lower the homeless population and inconvenience. I found this opportunity through the following article: https://advance.lexis.com/document/?pdmfid=1516831&crid=ece06b8c-a41e-4f4a-b040-08eae82066fb&pddocfullpath=%2Fshared%2Fdocument%2Fnews%2Furn%3AcontentItem%3A5W76-00G1-JCMN-Y2YG-00000-00&pddocid=urn%3AcontentItem%3A5W76-00G1-JCMN-Y2YG-00000-00&pdcontentcomponentid=299488&pdteaserkey=sr10&pditab=allpods&ecomp=bfyk&earg=sr10&prid=96a54ecd-699b-472b-b1a6-18d88d9a20cf. And through the following video of a man who is planning on turning his coin laundry store into housing:  https://www.youtube.com/embed/ExgxwKnH8y4?version=3...=1...1...ohide=2...wsearch=0...winfo=1...load_policy=1...de=transparent . What leads me to believe an opportunity exists: The countless homeless population throughout the city needs to be solved somehow, and with living costs increasing by the year this pro...

Identifying Local Opportunities

Bartley is a felon who was charged about 3 years ago with kidnapping charges and two counts of robbery at local convenience stores in the Spokane valley area. Prior to being charged with recent crimes, Bartley had been charged with six counts of burglary in the King County area. Problem: A man who continues to make the same mistakes over and over again with no real disciplinary action other than being incarcerated. Who has the problem: the court of law system has the problem. #2: Title: Guilty plea in threats against Trump, family. Link:   https://advance.lexis.com/document/?pdmfid=1516831&...

Forming an opportunity Belief

I believe there is a dilemma with poor lighting in the city of Gainesville. Many of my friends and people that come to my house state that they were a bit scared coming to my house because it was very dark outside and they didn't know where they were going. Many people tend to avoid walking through the northeast of campus as well because it is poorly lit and does not create a welcoming atmosphere. Prototypical customer: Anyone, old or young, who is traveling through dim lit areas and need to see well in order to be familiar with their surroundings and stay safe Interviews: #1 Young college student biking home from work late:  How often do you work late? - "I only usually work night shifts, so when I get off it is always dark outside."  Do you ever feel uncomfortable/scared biking home at night? - "Mostly uneasy yes. It's really because my neighborhood and the whole area really does not have any street lamps, and if they do they're very dim and don...

Entrepreneurship story

Image
My roommates are both heavily involved in the ECO (Entrepreneurship Collective) club here on campus in Gainesville. They both are always bringing their friends to the house, which of course are of similar entrepreneurial interest. My roommate, Christopher Bass, is actually the president of the organization. Being surrounding by these kinds of people really shows me how there is actually a big entrepreneurship/start-up community here in Gainesville, more than I realized before. My other roommate, Alex Pagani, currently works for a start-up company called ApexTek Labs. They are only a team of about 6 or 7 people, and each has a huge responsibility in the business. Being surrounded by these kinds of people with an entrepreneurial spirit has really shown me the passion that there is in entrepreneurship. It is a search of ideas and problems and solutions in innovative ways that can be put out into the world. I joined this class to get a better understanding of what it means to be an ent...

Bug list

1. I track dirt into my house each time I walk in and I have to sweep the floor every day.  Because every house is unique and does not have a sidewalk to knock the dirt off your shoes. 2. There is such heavy traffic sometimes that I am late to work which causes me to get a write-up.  Traffic is unpredictable and there are many reasons including recs and pedestrians which hold up traffic. 3. The lights in my neighborhood are very dim, to the point that the practically do not work. The lights are most likely worn out or very inefficient with lighting the neighborhood at night,  4. There doesn't seem to be a service that teaches young adults to build a personalized, well-balanced lifestyle and to transition into adulthood. Because there is more of an emphasis on classes and grading. 5. A class offered that is centered around active listening and empathetic learning in others Perhaps because it is not seen as an important part of the college learning experien...
