Final Reflection - 30A

1) This semester has been packed with lots of great experiences and some dreadful ones as well. Such as getting the flu for 2 weeks and going to see the west coast for the first time ever in my life. 2) For me, I would say the most formative experience personally was creating a venture and pitching that idea several times and tweaking it each time to make it better. Committing to an idea and following through with it despite all of the problems that may arise, just knowing when an idea is worth following and when it may not be. 3) I definitely see what it takes now to become an entrepreneur and have a better understanding of how entrepreneurs think. I don't particularly see myself as an entrepreneur because I do not actively seek out problems that need to be fixed and am not heavily involved in the local entrepreneurship community like some of my other friends. Venture Concept No. 2

Over the course of the past few weeks, I have been working towards the implementation of societal and environmentally friendly street lamps that provide better sight during dark hours. What merely started as a thought in my mind has sprouted into a full-blown business idea ready to be shared with the community. With the seed having been planted, I have been conducting several interviews, conducting elevator pitches and receiving feedback from classmates to see what works and what I should change to make better. There are several factors that have been important in developing the venture, however, my main focus has been primarily on three things: identifying opportunity, hammering innovation, and clarifying my venture concept. In this essay, I will elaborate on each of these sections while solidifying my venture in the process. 27A - Reading Reflection No.3

Cognitive Surplus - Clay Shirky 1) The general theme of cognitive surplus starts out with the concept that we have 8 hours of work, 8 hours of sleep and 8 hours to ourselves. It is a concept that has stemmed from the industrial revolution and has allowed more time to ourselves. In the modern era, many more people are working in different ways than we have in the past which is allowing us more free time. And generally speaking, most of us do not know how to spend that free time and put it towards something meaningful. 2) This book connected with me by demonstrating that most behavior is accomplished through motive, opportunity and means. It resonates with what is taught in the class because the class emphasizes acting upon certain means such as social networks to reach a specific audience of people. 3)If I were to design an exercise for the class based on this book, I would have people total up the number of hours daily they have for themselves. 28A - Your exit strategy

1) As far as my exit strategy with my current venture, I plan on selling it within the next 5 years. It is a quick fix problem that can be implemented within that amount of time, especially within the City of Gainesville. 2) I have selected this exit strategy for two reasons: I feel that 5 years is a sufficient time frame to implement these lights. And also afterwards this gives me more leeway to work on other goals in mind. 3) My exit strategy is because of the future of the company and where I personally see myself with it in the future. I have identified opportunities no differently than I would if I were to continue the endeavor for more than 5 years.

26A - Celebrating Failure

1) This semester, I lost a friend's trust after I spoke about him to a another friend and he found out. This was not a good approach and I should have been upfront and honest with him. It is much better to be honest and talk through to someone about how you feel than to tell someone else, even though it may be hard. 2) I learned that out of respect for the other person, it is better to be honest than to put on a facade or not be straightforward. Trust is at stake and it takes much more time to build trust than to break it, and once trust is lost. It takes time to build back. I learned that if someone has value in your life, than it is worthwhile to treat that person as such and treat them as you would want to be treated. 3) Failure is most definitely hard, and embarrassing. It takes fortitude and humility to be able to learn from failure and move on from it. Support systems (medium) 8. Educational resources (easy) 9. Equipment (easy) 10. Energy and passion (hard to come by) Energy and passion is probably the most valuable resource that we have because it is intangible, meaning that it does not have a price and you cannot buy it. It is something that comes from within each person when they create meaning in the work that they do. There is a strong purpose and connection as to why you are doing something. That energy and passion makes all the rest of the resources possible to attain. Without passion or energy, none of the other resources are possible.

25A - What's next

Existing Market: Interview 1: I interviewed a fellow friend named Jeffrey, who walks campus during the night and has had a handful of scary experiences at night. Jeffrey says that I should also focus on potentially adding some sort of alert system on the lights that monitors activity below during the night. Just having better lighting may help, but it is not guaranteed to make the streets safer for others at night. Other than this, he liked how Interview: 2: The second interview I conducted was of an engineer who I came across at the library, and he seemed to be more interested in the mechanics of the lightbulb of course, which I gave him the best of my knowledge how it worked. He said that he thought it was a great idea, yet he had never experienced any problems with poor lighting since he lives in a well-lit house. 22A: Elevator Pitch #3

Elevator Pitch #3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEtbrweDXWU&feature=youtu.be Feedback reflection : Enrique commented on my second elevator pitch and stated that I had great energy and kept it through the entirety of the pitch. He also stated that it was an improvement from my last one since I wasn't able to maintain interest of the viewer on my first elevator pitch. What did you change?:  I changed my introduction and actually had the lights turn on at the beginning of my video rather than use my hand to cover the camera. My friend helped me out with that. I also tried to let my pitch flow more rather than make it seem scripted, which could come off as ingenuine.

21A - Reading Reflection

1) Goals are inherently not a good method for moving forward, instead build systems that allow room for error to minimize discouragement. 2) The book goes into more personal problems that many of us come across when striving for goals which include burnout, discouragement, doubt, hardship, etc. We do not learn how to deal with any of these issues in ENT3003, but it is the other side of the same coin. In ENT3003, we learn the other side of the same coin. 3) I would practice mentally not getting worked up over goals and emotionally worked up over them. Instead, I would focus on building a system that I enjoy and practice being in a neutral state of mind which allows me to be in the present and enjoy what I am doing. 4) The "Aha" moment for me was this: The author states that he does not believe in finding your passion, but rather finding your energy within. 20A - Growing your social capital

Allan Malaki - Venture capitalist and startup owner 1) Allan is originally from the Philippines and moved here at the age of 20 years old. He did all of the schoolings in the Philippines and has a very tenacious attitude. He is also a certified CPA 2) I classify Allan as a domain expert because he has experience in the early phases of companies and currently has a successful startup that is based around accounting services for lower-end income people. 3) I actually found Allan through Couchsurfing a few months ago, as he hosted me in San Francisco for a couple of nights. As it turns out, he is a perfect candidate for the role I am trying to fill because of all that he has accomplished. 4) Allan was more than willing to share his knowledge with me. Elevator Pitch 2 Looking back on my first elevator pitch, I received feedback stating that my energy died down towards the end and that I was just saying facts, so I focused on keeping the energy up the entire time this time and not saying facts as a robot would. Because everyone knows the facts of course.

I imagine my avatar being a hard-working young lady. She drives a white Prius and enjoys working out and going on walks in her spare time. She has no children, but has a dog and enjoys taking her dog out for walks every night before she goes to bed. She is focused on making a living and pushing her career forwards. She enjoys reading books in her spare time, and instead of watching TV shows this is how she spends leisure time. I feel that I am primarily concerned with getting a career figured out for myself and love dogs, so I share those traits in common with this young lady. I also believe that reading books is a better way to spend my time as it opens me up to new perspectives.

You - I am a person who values responsibility, integrity, and perseverance. I enjoy playing guitar and acting and finding opportunities to network with others in these industries. I am a great diplomat and encourage others to explore their strengths and values when working with others, to create a dynamic team. My aspirations are to work on getting the city of Gainesville to help subsidize this project, as well as get exact costs down on how much it would cost to power the city with new, efficient light bulbs.
