21A - Reading Reflection

1) Goals are inherently not a good method for moving forward, instead build systems that allow room for error to minimize discouragement.
2) The book goes into more personal problems that many of us come across when striving for goals which include burnout, discouragement, doubt, hardship, etc. We do not learn how to deal with any of these issues in ENT3003, but it is the other side of the same coin. In ENT3003, we learn the other side of the same coin.
3) I would practice mentally not getting worked up over goals and emotionally worked up over them. Instead, I would focus on building a system that I enjoy and practice being in a neutral state of mind which allows me to be in the present and enjoy what I am doing.
4) The "Aha" moment for me was this: The author states that he does not believe in finding your passion, but rather finding your energy within. Staying energetic and inspired is paramount because you learn to enjoy life as you go through the journey. The whole finding your passion thing is overrated and it is very vague and directionless.

  1. Jason, I find that first statement about goals not being an effective way of moving forward very interesting. I feel having a different approach towards those goals is essential for success. I understand the whole idea of not being burnt out or not having direction or meaning while trying to find a passion but that is apart of the process. I'd love to know what book this was!

  2. Hi Jason! It would have been nice if you had included the book name so I could a better sense of the book you're describing, but nonetheless a good post. It's interesting to look at goals as not a source of motivation. I think having a certain goal can sort of pigeon-hole your priorities and you might end up working towards something that you ultimately don't want. I like his philosophy on finding your energy rather than your passion, I think that's really something more people should strive for.
