19A - Idea Napkin No. 2
You - I am a person who values responsibility, integrity, and perseverance. I enjoy playing guitar and acting and finding opportunities to network with others in these industries. I am a great diplomat and encourage others to explore their strengths and values when working with others, to create a dynamic team. My aspirations are to work on getting the city of Gainesville to help subsidize this project, as well as get exact costs down on how much it would cost to power the city with new, efficient light bulbs.
What are you offering to customers? - I am offering a more efficient method to better illuminate the dark, residential streets of Gainesville and throughout campus. Many residents of the community have experienced robberies, a fear of going outside at night and simply not being able to see well when driving, and I believe that by solving this unmet need of lighting, people will feel safer getting around at night.
Who are you offering it to? - All of my customers live in areas that lack sufficient lighting during the night. I am offering this service to any residents that live in areas with poor lighting. Typically those that live in lower-class areas tend to have lower-quality amenities. The service will benefit everyone all-around, but more specifically those living in lower-class areas that are susceptible to poor vision and burglary.
Why do they care? - Customers will pay money for more security in most cases. To improve the safety and value of their neighborhoods, customers will need higher quality amenities such as lighting. It is a statistically proven fact that those that live in residential areas with poor lighting experience more delinquency and unwillingness to go outside at night. So one should care.
What are your core competencies? - I am currently partnered with the University of Florida's police department to ensure safety in our community. My connections to these officers offer a stronger willingness to change this issue throughout our community. I also have partnered with engineering students who are working on testing new efficient methods of lighting.
I believe that these elements fit together well and that the foundation for the idea is present. There are still things that need to be worked on such as figuring out logistics and minimizing costs, which will help with getting the city of Gainesville to support this venture. Up-front capital may be needed to cover costs such as installation, approval from the city and materials to create better forms of lighting.
Feedback memo: I received only one comment for my previous napkin, and it was standard feedback telling me that my idea was concise and clear. I added on to this napkin and mostly changed who I am as a person, as my values are changing and I am seeing new perspectives.

Hello Jason, I appreciate your approach to fixing the lighting in Gainesville. There aren't many people that are as ambitious as you are regarding this matter. Seems like you're willing to fight until something is actually done. Networking with different people opens doors to many possibilities. I think networking is the best way to get your foot in the door in any situation. Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteJason, I think it is a great idea to light up the darker parts of Gainesville. You seem to have a good partnership with both the University of Florida's police department as well as the engineering department and both of those would seem to be a great fit for your idea. I wonder how much this venture would cost and who would pay. It would be great to get a grant from the state government or even the federal government for lighting for safety.
ReplyDeleteHi Jason, I think you have one of the best entrepreneurial ideas that I've seen in this class so far. As mentioned before, my walks to campus from my apartment are plagued by the low lighting in Gainesville, and it makes me incredibly uneasy, to the point that I will sometimes walk in the middle of the street because it's lighter than the sidewalks. Security is a big issue in Gainesville, so I think people would take to this service very well. Hope to see this come to fruition someday!
